Diablo (暗黑破坏神) sends one hero down sixteen floors beneath Tristram's cathedral after the Lord of Terror. Blizzard's 1996 action RPG, free here.
Diablo (暗黑破坏神) is Blizzard North's 1996 action role-playing game, and the one that fixed the shape of the genre: a single hero, a mouse, and a descent under the town of Tristram towards the Lord of Terror sealed beneath its cathedral.
Sixteen floors lie between the two, and the game rebuilds them every time you start — the layout, what is in the rooms, and what drops from it. That is why two players comparing notes never found the same dungeon, and why the loot was worth hunting at all. It also launched alongside Battle.net, which is how most people first played a Blizzard game against someone else.
The shareware release plays here as the Warrior in the first levels of the cathedral, with no download of your own needed. Players who own the full game can use their own copy, and saves are written to this browser rather than to anyone's server.
