Quake (雷神之锤) is id Software's 1996 shooter and the first that was truly 3D: medieval dimensions, shamblers, and a nailgun. Free here with LibreQuake or your own PAK0.
Quake (雷神之锤) is id Software's 1996 first-person shooter, and the game that moved the studio from the 2.5D of DOOM to fully three-dimensional levels: rooms could sit above other rooms, and both the world and the monsters in it were built from polygons you could walk around.
Its tone came from somewhere else entirely — medieval dimensions, shambling horrors and a nailgun, over a soundtrack Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails recorded for it. The engine shipped with QuakeC, a scripting language that let players change how the game behaved, and the deathmatch it ran over a network is what the modern arena shooter grew out of.
The shareware episode, Dimension of the Doomed, is free to play, and the archive can start it from LibreQuake — a fully free data set — without you supplying anything. If you own the full game, point it at your own PAK0.PAK instead and all four episodes run. Either way the files stay on this device.
